York Electricity Rates

Author: Adam Cain | Reviewer: Jesse Shaver | Updated:

York is a city with deep historical significance, having served as the first capital of the United States. Today, it remains a bustling hub for manufacturing and agriculture. In fact, the town has been called an “architectural museum” because of its expertly preserved 18th-century buildings.

On top of this history, York residents also have the option to choose their electricity provider. It’s called Energy Choice, and it allows you to compare York electricity rates, switch providers and potentially save on your electricity bill. By default your local utility is MetEd, who is responsible for reliable delivery of power and maintenance of energy infrastructure. While MetEd will always remain your local utility, you have the option to choose your electricity supplier, a right granted by Pennsylvania’s deregulated energy market allowing you to shop for competitive Pennsylvania electricity rates that could reduce your energy bills.

The MetEd Price to Compare (PTC)

The MetEd Price to Compare, or PTC, is the rate PPL charges for the electricity supply portion of your bill if you do not choose a third-party supplier. This rate is set by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) and serves as the benchmark for comparing offers from other suppliers on the PA Power Switch website or other retail energy marketplace. If a supplier’s rate is lower than the PTC, you could save money by switching.

The current MetEd price to compare is 11.91¢ per kilowatt-hour (kWh) effective June 1st, 2025. If a supplier’s rate is lower than the PTC, you could save money by switching.

Understanding Your MetEd Bill

Your MetEd bill is divided into two main parts: supply and delivery. Understanding the difference is key to taking advantage of energy choice.

  • Supply Charges: This is the cost of the actual electricity you use. This portion of your bill is competitive, and you can shop for a different supplier to get a lower rate. The MetEd PTC is the rate for this part of your bill.
  • Delivery Charges: These charges cover the costs associated with getting the electricity from the power plant to your home or business. This includes the cost of maintaining power lines, poles, and other infrastructure. MetEd will always be your delivery company, and this portion of the bill is regulated by the state, so it will not change if you switch suppliers.

MetEd Customer Assistance Programs

PPL offers several programs to help customers who may be struggling to pay their bills.

  • Pennsylvania Customer Assistance Program (PCAP): An income-eligible program to help low-income residential customers maintain electric service, offers a reduced monthly bill based on a percentage of your income, and provides debt forgiveness for past-due balances.
  • Dollar Energy Fund: An emergency hardship fund for residential customers who have experienced a recent financial hardship and need temporary help paying their electric bill.

  • Electricity Supply Rate – This is the rate for your electricity supply charged by the kilowatt-hour. You use it when comparing electricity plans. Your current rate is listed on your electricity bill.
  • Electricity Plan Type – ElectricityRates.com offers fixed-rate plans. Some plans can include incentives (like smart home systems) and some are sourced from 100% renewable energy.
