Ohio Energy Costs Likely to Rise in June 2025. Read on for more information about the announcement here.

For over 100 years, AES Ohio—formerly known as Dayton Power & Light has delivered electricity to Miami Valley and West Central Ohio. Today, the Dayton-based utility provider serves 1.25 million+ Ohioans.

All of these residents have the opportunity to participate in Ohio’s Energy Choice program. This lets AES Ohio customers switch to an electricity provider that offers a lower rate or maybe a provider that sources its electricity from renewable energy.

What is the AES Ohio Price to Compare?

The current AES Ohio price to compare is 8.58¢ per kilowatt-hour (kWh) effective June 1st, 2024 through May 31st, 2025.

The “price to compare” (PTC) is a benchmark rate set by your local utility company that allows you to compare their standard electricity rate with offers from other retail suppliers.

June 1st, 2025 - May 31st, 2026 9.45¢

AES Ohio Energy Choice

Ohio deregulated its electricity markets in 1999, giving Ohioans Energy Choice. After that, they were no longer stuck with their local utility provider’s electricity supply and could now switch providers.

There are many benefits to Energy Choice. The biggest being the potential for lower prices. In a competitive market, numerous electricity suppliers vie for customers. This competition can drive down prices, as suppliers may offer rates below the default rate offered by the local utility in order to attract and retain customers. Consumers can shop around and compare offers to find the most cost-effective plan for their needs, potentially leading to savings on their monthly bills.

Energy choice opens the door to a wider variety of plans tailored to different consumption patterns and preferences. Customers may find options such as fixed-rate plans for price stability, time-of-use rates that reward shifting energy usage to off-peak hours, or plans with different contract lengths. This allows consumers to select a plan that aligns best with their individual circumstances and energy habits.

Deregulation can also foster the growth of renewable energy by allowing suppliers to offer “green” energy plans sourced from solar, wind, or other renewable sources. Consumers who prioritize environmental sustainability can choose these options, directly supporting cleaner energy generation and potentially contributing to a more sustainable energy future.

Ohio consumers have several avenues available to explore competitive electricity rates and potentially lock in a fixed-rate plan to avoid AES’s Price to Compare fluctuations:

How To Read Your AES Ohio Electricity Bill

When you are thinking about switching electricity suppliers, it’s important to understand that there are two types of charges on your electric bill, delivery charges and supply charges. Switching electricity providers only affects your supply charges.

Delivery Charges

  • Do not change when you switch electricity suppliers
  • For the delivery and transmission of electricity to your home
  • Charged by your electric utility (AES Ohio)

Supply Charges

  • Can be lower if you switch electricity providers
  • Based on the electricity that you use by the kilowatt-hour (kWh)
  • Charged by your electricity provider or your public utility by default
