If you’re shopping around for a new energy plan in Dallas, you’re probably wondering where to start. In addition to the 100+ retail electric providers operating in the city, there are hundreds of electricity plans to choose from. On top of that, there are so many different types of electricity plans that it takes time to know which one is right for you.

Rather than losing your sanity and trying to gather all the information yourself, simply continue reading this article. In addition to explaining the different types of energy plans in Dallas, we’ll also look at how to choose the right one in minutes instead of days.

Fixed-Rate Energy Plans

The first and most common type of electricity plan in Dallas is the fixed-rate energy plan. Fixed-rate energy plans typically require you to sign a contract that’s one to three years in length, but they can be shorter or longer, depending on the provider. Fixed-rate electricity plans are so popular because they tend to have lower rates than other types of plans.

However, the key to having low rates with these plans is understanding your energy usage and choosing a plan to match. You see, fixed-rate electricity plans charge different prices based on how much electricity you use. This system, known as tiered or indexed rates, is typically based on quantities of less than 1,000 kWh, between 1,000 and 2,000 kWh, and over 2,000 kWh.

Variable-Rate Energy Plans

The second type of energy plan in Dallas is the variable-rate electricity plan. Variable-rate plans are the polar opposite of fixed-rate plans. With a fixed-rate plan, your rate doesn’t change for the duration of your contract if you use the appropriate amount of electricity. With variable-rate plans, however, your rate can change at any time, including in the middle of the month.

As a result, it’s possible to save money with these types of plans, but it’s also possible to spend way more than you were planning to.

Prepaid Energy Plans

There are three main types of energy plans in Dallas – fixed-rate, variable-rate, and prepaid. Unlike fixed and variable-rate plans, where you pay for your electricity at the end of the month, you purchase your electricity at the start of the month with a prepaid plan. Because you’re buying electricity before you use it, you don’t require a credit check or a deposit with a prepaid electricity plan. As long as you can provide an address and payment, anyone can sign up for this type of plan.

Flat-Rate Energy Plans

If there were a fourth type of electricity plan that could be considered a major player in Dallas, it would be the flat-rate plan. Flat-rate energy plans are unique from others in that they offer unlimited electricity. Here’s how they work.

  • You pay a flat fee for electricity at the start of the month, as determined by your electricity provider.
  • You then get to use as much electricity as you want without paying anything extra.
  • However, your provider determines your flat rate, and they typically base it on your average usage.
  • Just to be safe, they often increase the rate substantially to ensure you don’t get any free electricity.
  • Green Energy Electricity Plans

Green energy plans in Dallas are extremely common, but they probably aren’t what you think. Rather than directly using solar or wind power when you sign up for this type of plan, you’re signing up for renewable energy credits. In other words, there’s a good chance that your “green” energy is actually coming from non-renewable resources. However, your monthly payment is dedicated entirely to the production and research of green energy. Check out all you there is to know about Switching to a 100% Renewable Energy Supplier here.

    Unique Energy Plan Add-Ons

In addition to signing up for an electricity plan, some providers offer additional perks that are unique to specific plans. Here are some of the perks commonly offered by electricity providers.

Free Nights and Weekends Energy Plans

Several fixed and variable-rate electricity plans feature free nights and weekends as part of the plan benefits. With these types of plans, there are pre-determined times when you literally receive free electricity.

    Pet-Friendly Energy Plans

Pet-friendly energy plans aren’t a specific type of electricity plan. Instead, they’re electricity plans with perks and benefits designed to benefit your pet. Additionally, the company that provides this type of electricity plan, GoodCharlie Energy, is trying to make Texas a no-kill state, making them the perfect provider for pet owners.

    Protection Plan Energy Plans

As with pet-friendly plans, protection plan energy plans aren’t a special “type” of electricity plan. Instead, they’re electricity plans that incorporate protection plans for your plumbing, HVAC, or electrical systems when you sign up for them. Constellation and Rhythm Energy, for instance, offer outstanding protection plans when you sign up for one of their electricity plans.

    Long-Term Energy Plans

As the name implies, long-term energy plans are longer than traditional options. Long-term energy plans are always fixed-rate in nature and can be from three to five years in length. The advantage of these plans is that they typically offer lower rates. The disadvantage, however, is that three to five years is a long commitment, and there’s a chance you’ll move or make household changes that affect your electricity usage before the end of your contract.
