Illinois sees 1 million more residents turn to electricity choice

The expansion of electricity deregulation offered Illinois residents the opportunity to switch electricity providers.

Many residents have been hesitant to make the change, but Constellation Energy reports that the results of the recent votes on electricity aggregation will give around 1 million more people access to lower electricity rates.

Electricity aggregation can be an uncertain approach to electricity deregulation at times, because some of the programs do not allow residents to opt out in favor of another electricity provider if they prefer. However, with the number of people relying on retail electricity providers growing more than fourfold from 316,000 people before the votes, this major shift could give Illinois residents a new level of comfort with shopping for electricity suppliers.

“The response to electricity choice savings in Illinois has been outstanding,” Bruce Stewart, chief retail marketing officer for Constellation Energy, said in a statement. “We are thrilled so many Illinois residents who have not yet taken advantage of electric choice can now benefit from the lower rates we can provide, whether it is through a municipal aggregation program or our other retail offers.”
