Maryland has issued a call for companies interested in investing in an animal waste power plant, according to The Associated Press.
Maryland has a fairly strict renewable electricity standard, with electricity providers required to produce at least 20 percent of their power from renewable sources by 2022. The new facility will be funded under Maryland’s Clean Bay Power program, which is designed to ease this transition.
However, DelmarvaNow.com reports that the power plant will need have a peak capacity of at least 10 megawatts, more than three times of the size of the state’s proposed off-shore wind turbines.
“Maryland is leading the nation’s efforts in clean energy and sustainability, and our state’s growing green jobs sector is vital to our ability to create jobs and compete globally in the new economy,” Governor Martin O’Malley said in a statement.
The animal waste plant serves a dual purpose, however, in that Maryland is in the midst of a major effort to rehabilitate the Chesapeake Bay and using animal waste as fuel would reduce the runoff into the bay.
