  • It does not cost anything to switch electricity providers. If you’re under a current contract with a retail electricity provider, there may be early cancellation fees for switching before your contract ends. We recommend reaching out to your current provider to ensure you won’t incur any fees.

  • If you live in Texas, you can choose to start your service up to 90 days out from when you sign up due to local regulations. Outside of Texas, your switch usually takes anywhere from 1-2 billing cycles after you sign-up and you cannot choose an exact date. If you are currently under contract with another electricity provider, we recommend contacting them to confirm the best time to switch and avoid any early cancellation fees.

  • To find your current electric supply rate, refer to your current utility bill. The electric supply rate will be in cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) and is the actual amount of energy that you use. If you do not have a current bill handy, contact your current utility directly.

  • Some providers offer plans that are powered by 100% renewable energy. When you sign up for a renewable energy plan, your electricity usage is offset by Renewable Energy Certificates (REC’s) purchased by your electricity provider and your electricity is still delivered by your local utility company. To see renewable plans, enter your ZIP Code and look for plans with “100% Renewable Sources” in the marketplace.

  • When you sign up for electricity through a retail electricity provider, your electricity supply rate will change to the rate that you signed up for. Your bill will still come from your local utility company and all delivery charges from your utility will remain the same. In Texas, your bill will come from the electricity provider that you signed up with.

  • Yes, usually. The person who pays the electricity bill has control over the electric contract. If the electricity bill comes to you, in your name, and you pay it directly, then you have the right to lower your rate by switching providers.

  • If you signed up online, you should receive an email confirming your sign up from your chosen provider. If you signed up but haven’t received your confirmation after 3 business days, please contact us at support@electricityrates.com

  • If you’re experiencing an outage or need to turn on electricity, please contact your local utility company directly.

  • Some plans come with early cancellation fees for ending your contract early. For most plans, you’re able to cancel your sign-up within a few days without incurring a fee. Please refer to the plan’s terms and conditions for specific details.

  • Your electric provider should provide you a notice in the mail at least 30 days before your contract expires. This notice will let you know that it is time to renew you contract or shop for a new plan.

  • If you are receiving your electric supply from your default utility, this is the rate you or your small business is currently paying.

  • Unfortunately, energy deregulation is not available in all states. Additionally some utilities in states with energy deregulation do not offer the ability to switch suppliers.

  • This depends on the moving situation. If you moving to an area that is still within your current suppliers service area, your supplier will expect to transfer your service to the new location. If you are moving outside of the current service area, such as moving to a new state, you might be able to avoid paying the early cancellation fee. Check with your current supplier for full details.

  • No. the reliability of your service will stay the same and your power will remain on throughout the switch.

  • Some plans do require credit checks. Depending on the credit check, a deposit may be required to begin service. If this is required, you will be prompted during the sign-up process on our marketplace.
