About Dominion Energy Solutions

When electricity deregulation began to go into effect in the 1990s and the early part of the new millennium, many of the country’s biggest utility companies decided to take the plunge into the competitive market along with some of the new electricity companies.

Dominion Energy Solutions was the retail electricity provider set up by massive utility company Dominion Resources, which serves parts of Virginia and North Carolina.

Dominion Energy Solutions is wholly owned by Dominion Resources, having been created separately with the start of electricity deregulation. Meanwhile, Dominion Energy Solutions also owns Cirro Energy, a Dallas-based retail electricity provider that serves that massive Texas electricity market. In addition to electricity, Dominion also plays a major role in the natural gas market throughout much of the northeast.

While Virginia has implemented electricity deregulation, Dominion Energy Solutions has expanded well beyond that one state to serve some of the biggest competitive electricity markets in the country, including Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.

Dominion Electricity Services

Coming from a background as a utility company, Dominion has placed a strong emphasis on reliability and predictability in its electricity prices. The company offers fixed electricity rates to both business and residential customers, allowing them to better predict their electricity bills and protecting against the variations in utilities’ prices along with fuel costs.

Many parts of the East Coast still rely heavily on traditional forms of energy, such as coal, gas and nuclear power plants, so Dominion does not offer any particular options to support renewable electricity. Still, most states around the country, including those where Dominion operates, have begun to implement renewable portfolio standards that utilities and electricity suppliers will need to meet. This should help support green energy without necessarily requiring special plans.
