Reading Your United Illuminating Bill
Electricity bills can be confusing, if not daunting, when you first read them. On your United Illuminating (UI) electric bill, there are acronyms, percentages and charges that you may not understand.
You don't need to spend time examining every part of your bill. However, knowing things like how to find your account number and the difference between supply and delivery charges can help you make better energy decisions. This is especially the case for those that want to take advantage of Energy Choice and save by switching electricity providers in Connecticut.

Understanding Your United Illuminating Electric Bill
There are three components of a UI bill you should know:
- Your Account Number
- Bill Details Section
- Usage History
Your Account Number
Your account number is a 14-digit number that can be found at the top of the first page of your UI bill.
If you decide to switch electricity providers, you will need your account number to make the switch.
Bill Details Section
In the bill details section, you can see a breakdown of all the charges that go into your electric bill. Besides seeing the total amount due, this section also includes important information about where your money is going.
- Delivery Charges – This goes to your utility provider (United Illuminating) and supports the delivery of electricity to your home. These charges are not affected if you change electricity providers.
- Generation Services Charges – This is the portion of your electric bill that pays for the electricity you use and goes to your electricity provider. These charges will be affected if you change electricity providers.
The bill details section is also where you can find your electricity supply rate, which is what you use to compare electricity plans to see if you can save. You can find this rate in the Generation Services Charges section, or in the box to the right of the bill details section under "Residential Generation Information."
Usage History
On the second page of your electric bill, you can find your electric usage history. This section can be helpful in planning how much electricity you will use, and therefore, how much you will spend in the upcoming months.
