How to Compare Texas Electricity Providers
If you live in Texas, you likely have the power to choose electricity providers and shop for your own electricity rate. This page will give you an overview of what to consider when comparing Texas electricity providers and run down of electricity providers that service Texas residents.
When comparing Texas electricity suppliers, there are a few factors to consider.
#1 – The Electricity Provider’s Terms of Service and Electricity Facts Label (EFL)
The most important factor to consider for any provider is its plan’s Terms of Service and Electricity Facts Label. A plan’s “Terms of Service” is the document that both you and the electricity provider must abide by. The plan’s “EFL” gives you an overview of the plan, including its pricing structure.
Reading both documents helps you understand the electricity plan and pick the right plan for you. If your provider does not abide by these documents (a very rare occurrence), file a complaint with the Public Utilities Commission of Texas.
#2 – The Electricity Provider’s Reputation
Not all providers are created equal. While there are many good suppliers out there, some have built up a poor reputation. There are two ways to learn about a provider’s reputation.
First, you can ask friends about their experiences. They may have a provider they highly recommend or have one that they feel you should avoid. Second, you can search the internet. Learn more about this in the “Texas Electricity Provider Reviews” section below.
#3 – The Electricity Provider’s Values & Corporate Responsibility
Many suppliers support various causes. Some will donate a certain portion of their profits to charity or local organizations. Some have the mission to support the advancement of renewable energy.
If you identify with a provider’s values, that can be a reason for you to pick them. You can feel good that the money you pay for electricity is also going to something you support.
Leveraging Texas Electricity Provider Reviews
When searching for reviews on a Texas electricity provider, keep the following in mind.
#1 – Be Specific about What You’re Looking For
Be sure to search for a specific provider and state to get the most accurate reviews for your area.
Use this format: “[insert electricity provider] Texas reviews”
#2 – Use Multiple Review Sources to Compare Providers
Don’t just look at one site’s reviews on a provider. Check multiple.
The overall review score can vary by source. It is best to check multiple sources so you can get a full understanding of all the reviews.
#3 – Ask If the Reviews Apply to Your Situation
Some reviews might be bad or positive but don’t apply to you and your situation.
For example, maybe the reviews are all from another state or about a different section of their business that you won’t interact with. Take these reviews with a grain of salt. They can still give you an idea of a provider’s reputation, but they may not reflect your experience.
No Deposit and Prepaid Texas Electricity Providers
Depending on your credit score and your recent electricity payment history, an electricity supplier may ask you to pay a security deposit before you enroll. There are a few steps you can take to get around this.
- Try to sign up for a plan: You don’t know whether a supplier needs a security deposit from you until you try signing up. If the provider requires a security deposit from you, move on to the next step.
- Sign up for a plan under a different provider: Try to sign up with a few different providers. Each provider has its own credit requirements. Some are more lenient than others. If all these providers still ask you to pay a deposit, move on to the next step.
- Ask to have the deposit broken up or pick a prepaid plan: Some providers can break your deposit up into multiple payments. While you still pay money upfront, it’s more manageable compared to the full deposit. To try this, contact the electricity provider directly.
You can also choose a prepaid plan. This type of plan allows you to pay for your electricity upfront. After you sign up, you get updates on your usage throughout the month and you can replenish your account as you go.
