In an attempt to convince lawmakers to reconsider deregulating Michigan's energy market, many businesses are speaking out and writing letters to policy makers to outline the advantages of being able to seek out a region's best electricity rates, according to the Bridge Center for Michigan.

Most recently, James Hallan, president and CEO of the Michigan Retailers Association, wrote about the legislation that capped retail electricity sales at 1 percent of total electricity distribution. This, he says, has resulted in Michigan residents paying the high electricity bills in the Midwest, and rates that surpass the national average.

From a business standpoint, these high electricity rates are snubbing companies' attempts to grow and remain competitive against other businesses in the region. To make their case, a number of organizations are coming together to make a change, the media outlet stated.

"Thankfully, Michigan consumers, businesses and industry experts are coming together to do something about it. On Oct. 15, Energy Choice Now (ECN), the Association of Businesses Advocating Tariff Equity (ABATE), the Customer Choice Coalition (CCC) and Energy Michigan will host a much-needed series of discussions focused on the state’s electricity market and the need for full and open electricity competition," Hallan wrote.

In nearby Illinois, a deregulated energy market has allowed residents to search for the best energy rates.
